Who gets to decide what “high” and “pop” culture is? Who decided that art forms from Europe are more prestigious than art forms from other parts of the world? And how can multicultural artists remain true to their vision in an environment where audiences aren’t always familiar with our cultural contexts? This polemic and topical workshop on “decolonising” our artists’ mind has been delivered for more than three years, to audiences as wide and varied as young people from Fairfield with no formal arts education all the way to international conferences of leading arts educators and professionals.
Devising and Crafting a Play
PYT Fairfield Style

Length: 3 hours, Face-to-face
Cost: $499.00

Traditional playwrighting favours a singular writer from a singular point of view writing the world as they see it and with actors cast afterwards. Playwrights in Australia overwhelmingly come from privileged backgrounds, with the free time and aspiration to hone a craft and ultimately, make work for privileged audiences that mirror them. Devised theatre, conversely, positions actors as artists with control over storytelling and representation. Devised theatre leads to work that in informed by a much broader worldview, and subsequently can speak to new and diverse audiences.

The challenge? Working collaboratively has its own challenges, as a lot of devised work ends up being abstract and inaccessible to new theatre audiences.

By marrying devising methods such as improvisation with rigorous writing structure more commonly found in film and TV, PYT Fairfield has pioneered a novel methodology for creating new theatre work for the stage, in any genre. This workshop demonstrates how we created our groundbreaking plays “Tuan’s Party,” “KHair” and “The Friend Ship: A Naughty Cool Adventure.”
